Room by room

Rooms that grow with them

A child's room has to work for the child they are now and the one they will be in three years, and those are not the same person. The trick is knowing which parts should be easy to change and which should be bought once.

How we plan a kids room

Every kids room starts with the room, not the furniture

We put the money into the pieces that stay, the bed, the storage, the lighting, and keep the parts tied to a current enthusiasm cheap and swappable. The dinosaur phase should cost twenty dollars to leave behind, not a repaint and a new wardrobe.

Our design experts have finished and photographed 20 kids' rooms, mostly bohemian, traditional and transitional.

Storage and surfaces that last

Storage that children actually use is storage they can reach. Low open bins get tidied, high cupboards do not, and a wardrobe rail at adult height is a rail a six year old ignores.

Surfaces take the real punishment. Performance fabrics, washable paint, solid timber where a knock shows as character rather than damage. The pieces we source are the ones we have seen survive this, which is a different list from what looks best in a photograph.

Plan for the bed to change and the rest to stay. A cot becomes a single, a single becomes a double, and if the storage and lighting were planned for the room rather than the stage, nothing else has to move.

Sharing, and rooms that do two jobs

Plenty of these rooms sleep two children, or sleep one and host homework and a guest. That is a layout problem before it is a decorating one, and it is worth solving on paper first.

Two beds along one wall, bunks, or a bed with a desk beneath it each change what the rest of the room can hold. We lay the options out so you can see the trade before anything is bought.
